Don't keep your value a secret

It wasn't too long ago that I started at Citi. Now, just a few months in, I'm on the other side of things, recruiting and interviewing for open spots on my team. Since this is the first time I've had real influence on the hiring process, I'm just now seeing how candidates present themselves.

Technology recruiting is weird. Both sides of it try to express what they're really looking for, but it ends up in a state of ambiguity. Job descriptions with a nauseating laundry list of technology acronyms and jargon compel the creation of resumes with a similarly long list. And resumes that have stuff like "used AWS S3, EC2, STS, RDS" don't give me much information about what you really do, or the value you bring.

It seems to be a problem in IT and technology in general. A lot of emerging technologies or even small changes don't clearly articulate their value. The same issues seem to plague a lot of technical resumes. I can decipher what tools you may have used from statements like the above list of AWS services, but I'm missing the "why". As in, why did you click all those buttons in the AWS console or make those API calls?

The explanations don't need to be particularly detailed. If you built out a pipeline and moved your project to IaC, say that and also the value it brings. Did deployments speed up? Can you deploy to production daily or weekly now, instead of monthly? Can you go one step further and tell me how much that might have been worth to the business in time or money? If you were pitching your work to your current manager, could you persuade them to let you spend your time on it?

I know firsthand how uncomfortable making these value statements can be. It feels phony or uncomfortable to me in resume form, but if I'm pitching a project at work, it feels a lot easier. That's the approach we need more broadly in technology.

  1. These enabled the player to stop every reel, allowing a level of "skill" so as to satisfy the New Jersey gaming legal guidelines of the day which required that players have been able to to} management the sport indirectly. The unique conversion was utilized to approximately 50 late-model Bally slot machines. Because the standard machine stopped the reels automatically in lower than 10 seconds, weights have been added to the mechanical timers to extend the automated stopping of the reels. By the time the New Jersey Alcoholic Beverages Commission had approved the conversion for use in New Jersey arcades, the word was out and each other distributor started adding skill stops. The machines have been an enormous hit on the Jersey Shore and the remaining unconverted Bally machines have been destroyed as they had turn out to be instantly out of date. A bonus is a special feature of the 1xbet actual recreation theme, which is activated when certain symbols appear in a profitable combination.
